Amalfi Coast

Stretching for 50km along a promontory from Sorrento to Salerno is some of Europe's most beautiful coastline. A narrow and winding road, which precariously clings to cliffs, affords spectacular views over blue waters. The road winds through numerous villages with white stucco houses and ceramic church domes nested amongst terraced vineyards and orchards that demonstrate the versatility of its occupants in adapting their utilization of the terrain to suit its diversity.

Among them, the three most notable are Positano, clambering down a vertiginous slope to the sea, Amalfi with its remarkable Duomo, once a maritime power, the rival of Venice and now a popular resort, and Ravello, a hill town with the best views on the coast.
